چکیده

Luhmann et al. (1) and Jakosky et al. (2) showed that the Martian atmosphere was eroded (sputtered) by energetic O ions that are formed from escaping 0 and accelerated back into the atmosphere by the solar wind fields. This collisional ejection process appears to explain measured isotope ratios for Ar and N in the martian atmosphere (2, 3) and it may affect the early evolution of this atmosphere (1-3). More recently, D. M. Kass and Y. L. Yung (4) presented a more detailed calculation of the loss of Martian atmosphere. They found that 3 bars of CO2 are driven off by sputtering, an amount three times greater than the size of Earth's atmosphere. This is a huge increase in atmospheric loss over the earlier estimate of about 0.1 bars (1, 2). This increase came about because Kass and

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) Mission

The MAVEN spacecraft launched in November 2013, arrived at Mars in September 2014, and completed commissioning and began its one-Earth-year primary science mission in November 2014. The orbiter’s science objectives are to explore the interactions of the Sun and the solar wind with the Mars magnetosphere and upper atmosphere, to determine the structure of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere and ...

Primordial argon isotope fractionation in the atmosphere of Mars measured by the SAM instrument on Curiosity and implications for atmospheric loss

[1] The quadrupole mass spectrometer of the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on Curiosity rover has made the first high-precision measurement of the nonradiogenic argon isotope ratio in the atmosphere of Mars. The resulting value of 36Ar/38Ar = 4.2 ± 0.1 is highly significant for it provides excellent evidence that "Mars" meteorites are indeed of Martian origin, and it points to a signi...

The importance of pickup oxygen ion precipitation to the Mars upper atmosphere under extreme solar wind conditions

[1] While the Mars upper atmosphere is continuously bombarded by charged particles of solar and planetary origins, the energy flux carried is often not sufficient to significantly affect the neutral atmosphere. However, we show that this is not the case during major space weather events. By applying two Mars global models—a Monte Carlo model for simulating pickup O+ precipitation at the exobase...

Evolution of the Martian Atmosphere: Results of a Monte Carlo Model of Sputtering

Using a Monte-Carlo model, we determine the sputtering yields for the upper atmosphere of Mars at three different epochs (the present, -2.5 Gyr ago and -3.5 Gyr ago). The carbon yield increases from 1 at 3.5 Gyr ago to 2 at present. These yields imply that sputtering is a major loss process for COz, especially during the early history of the solar system. Over the same period, the yield of oxyg...

Detection of Methane in the Martian Atmosphere: Evidence for Life

Using the Fourier Transform Spectrometer at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope, we observed a spectrum of Mars at the P-branch of the strongest CH4 band at 3.3 μm with resolving power of 180,000 for the apodized spectrum. Summing up the spectral intervals at the expected positions of the 15 strongest Doppler-shifted martian lines, we detected the absorption by martian methane at a 3.7 sigma lev...

MAVEN observations of the response of Mars to an interplanetary coronal mass ejection.

Coupling between the lower and upper atmosphere, combined with loss of gas from the upper atmosphere to space, likely contributed to the thin, cold, dry atmosphere of modern Mars. To help understand ongoing ion loss to space, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft made comprehensive measurements of the Mars upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and interactions with the Sun and s...
